About this video

The whole story of Adam (peace be upon him) and Iblis, gathered in order from its seven tellings in the Qur'an: the announcement to the angels, creation from clay, the names, the prostration and the refusal, the Garden and its one tree, the whisper, the two answers, and the descent with a promise of guidance. It also checks the popular details that are not authentic — Azazil, the serpent and the peacock, the tree's name, the landing places, giant heights, 'Hawwa ate first' — with the classical verdicts, and compares the account respectfully with Genesis. Framing is drawn, with attribution, from Ibn Kathir, al-Qurtubi, Ibn Jarir at-Tabari and al-Hasan al-Basri, and from lectures by Dr Israr Ahmed, Maulana Ishaq and Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza.
